Media downplaying the passport issue (what's new)
The media - including mainstream LGBT and trans orgs (which as usual betray their extremely middle class and cis-led bias) - is once again portraying the issue of the passport ban as just being about "feelings" on our part or some b.s. and ignoring the real dangers we'd be put in by having the wrong sex listed on our passport.
For instance, this article https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2025/01/existing-passports-wont-be-affected-by-donald-trumps-anti-trans-order-white-house-claims/ does not once mention the problem of mismatched IDs. Put simply, for someone like me, who has a driver's license, birth certificate, and social security that are all now listed as female, carrying around a passport saying "male" could easily lead to a weekend in a jail cell.
This isn't hypothetical. I was targeted by a serial rapist in 2021, and another trans girl who the same guy abused had made the mistake of going to the police to report him (big mistake, but she was younger and still a little naive). The result? The cops arrested her for having mismatched IDs. They didn't charge her with anything, but they can hold you in a men's jail until Monday if they nab you on a Friday. There are many other dangers these kind of rules open up. We need better reporting, but I fear the class bias of so much trans journalism and activism has made it impossible. It really feels like no one cares what happens to us. (And this isn't new, of course.)
