Why are your curtains always closed?

Not talking about the big mansions with beautiful views. But the normal people houses and condos always seem have their curtains drawn and closed, even when the view is private facing. I get that blocking the heat is vital during some hours and when south and west facing. But some homes seem to never open their curtains, or even have furniture blocking them so they're effectively always closed. What's up?
