Leave town due to air quality?

Hi all. I’m kind of freaking out about the air quality. I know the aqi has been looking better but as I understand it that doesn’t take into account asbestos and other harmful chemicals. All those old houses and electronics burning… im paranoid im gonna get cancer in a few years from breathing it in (I live in Pasadena about 3.5 miles from the Eaton Fire). I also have asthma, and while I haven’t had an episode in many years, that’s still a thing.

I am a freelancer but have a part time job at a library. I told my boss I feel uncomfortable being in LA given the conditions, and want to leave town for a few weeks until it’s safer to return. Especially since at the library the doors are always opening as people come in an out, there aren’t enough air purifiers for the building, and it smells slightly of smoke. She told me I could go, but I would have to quit my job.

I just want to know - am I being dramatic by wanting to leave LA right now due to the toxic air? Is it really that bad? My mom says just wear a mask, you’ll be fine. My aunt says if there’s asbestos, get the hell out of there. I don’t really want to lose this part time job but if it’s really worth it, I’d do it.

Just looking for some perspective. This is my first major wildfire experience.
