Game with Persistent World/Shared Narrative

I've always loved MMOs, especially the older tab target ones. I still play LOTRO regularly, and have a lifetime sub. Theme Parks are nice, but they are also static.

Over the years I've looked for a game with a persistent "changing" world, and I've found a few, but for one reason or another didn't stick with them. They tend to lean on PvP for their "content" and in the case of games like Foxhole, are convoluted as Hell.

The games I would say "actually" did it well, weren't MMOs per se. Helldivers 2's Galactic War is great. Yeah, it may be "pointless," but I can log on, play an operation, or even a mission, and track the war outside the game, it's neat. Tack on some avenues for external RP, and it's great!

Other games that come to mind are Mechwarrior Online Faction/Community Warfare. I could log in, drop with a group and fight, and just watch the fight for the planet unfold. Planetside 2 was another one, but it seemed lacking and "basic." Not a bad game, but It really felt like Battlefield on a bigger map. Still fun though.

If I'm being honest, I kind of prefer the "instanced" nature of the first two games. I can go play a game on my terms, contribute, and be on my way. I really struggle to play games for long stretches, personally.

If I'm looking for games to break up Helldivers 2, and give me more stuff to play around with so I don't stagnate or burn out, any good places to look?
