My Carrot & My Cake 🥕🍰

Kibbe suggests a few films to watch in his book and says to note down style components that "stand out to us and what brought us joy. Especially anything that was a new idea or new sight.” I’ve watched An Affair to Remember already, so I simply wrote down the styles and moments that brought me joy.

Style elements that stood out to me:\ The orange and cream patchwork dress. The pleated mauve dress she wears the last day onboard. The pearl jewellery and crystal brooches. The black gown from her performance.

Moments that brought me joy:\ When she dips her finger in the champagne, places a little behind her ears like a perfume, and flicks the remaining liquid on the nosy busybody that sat right next to her at the bar. It reminds me of my best friend who taught me to dab wine behind my ears for good luck.

The chapel scene where she prays to Virgin Mary. As a devout Catholic it brought me to tears. We don’t see faith displayed in film like this very much anymore. This moment is beautiful and meaningful to me.

The Piano Bar scene where she sings. It reminds me of a spot in Montmartre, a neighbourhood very dear to my heart with lots of memories.

The next part of the ‘game’ is to “use images that jazzed you from those movies (The Carrot) to create new, inspired ideas for your life (Your Cake).”

Truth be told I struggled a bit, because I don’t wear dresses much since I’m very particular about fit and I’m a bit modest in dressing. My main rule is if I can’t wear a bra comfortably, it’s an automatic no. The sequin jacket set is what I already wear in real life, casually or dressed up, so it worked. I was content with that as my choice until this dress popped up! It’s stunningly perfect and would absolutely be a dream to wear. I love everything about it and think that it’s a pretty good Deborah Kerr inspired ‘fancy outfit’.
