Cost of hiring a composer?
I'm looking for some advice on hiring music composers. Having never done it before I don’t really know what I should be expecting.
At this point I've reached out to 4 chiptune composers that I've found on itch.io. I liked the initial albums they posted that I listened to, but would like to work with an artist to create music specifically for my game.
When I reached out, I specifically requested a ~1 minute sample that I would be commissioning. I offered some basic direction with regards to what I was looking for, and that it would be a background track. As well, I sent a 1 minute long “highlight” reel of the game with the art that I’m using to give them a feel for the game.
Of the 4 that I reached out to, so far only 2 have gotten back to me with pricing.
One quote was for $60 and they told me that they charge $30 per 30 seconds of exclusive music that they make. The other was $150 for this sample and that they charged an hourly rate of 40/hour typically but were asking 25/hour for this sample.
My initial reaction, as an indie dev with a somewhat limited budget, was that the 30 $/sec of music seemed reasonable and the 40/hour was pretty dang expensive. But is that the case?
Obviously in the whole wide world you can find someone willing to work for free or you can go as expensive as you like. But to a certain degree you get what you pay for and I’m looking for what people think is “reasonable” in the indie composer/game space.
Thanks!
