New fiber service enters apartment on opposite side from LAN setup. Looking for advice on how to bridge the gap. Floorplan included.
Sorry, I know this is a conceptually simple problem but I lack the vocab to know how to solve it
-----------------------------------
The Problem
I am transferring from 1gig cable to 1gig fiber internet service. The problem is that these enter through opposite ends of the apartment.
- Cable internet: conveniently terminates in the living room and where I've built my LAN and routed cables from. It's the perfect centralized location for routing & switching.
- Fiber internet: Ethernet drop from the laundry room ceiling at the opposite end of the apartment.
Here's a simplified diagram of the apartment layout. the the minimal obstructions and direct line of sight between the Ethernet drop and LAN is a nice silver lining.
Possible solutions
I will not re-arrange the LAN to accommodate this new laundry room location. the options as I see it are:
- Either I pay an electrician to snake or extend the ethernet line to the living room.
- Or I go for a wireless solution.
My current thinking is that any money toward an electrician might be better spent purchasing wireless access points to "beam" the internet from the Laundry room to the living room. What's the right terminology here? Is this bridging? a wireless backhaul?
Help!
Any ideas on an elegant way to solve this problem? I suspect I could set up WAP at or near laundry room drop (bonus points for PoE) and then use (or upgrade?) my existing TP Link AC-1750 router to something better suited to receive the full 1gig without any drops.
