Am i playing hayday wrong???

I never seem to have enough expansion items for anything. Barn is at 1950 and i have barely made a dent into the nether terrains, even though i have been playing for like 7 years and im level 114. I have 158 permit expansions im never able to use because i never have enough items for it and i see smaller farms that have everything unlocked and i just wonder if thats normal for someone that doesn’t have a baby farm (i did on my sisters phone but then she decided to adopt the farm ahaha). Im in a casual neighborhood because it’s with my friends irl so idk if swapping materials is what gets people to unlock more?
