Thoughts on becoming a HENRY
Hey guys and girls, I just need to sound something out...
I'm under 30 and I'm currently a civil servant on roughly 50K a year. I'm outside of London. The work I do is very fulfilling and I enjoy it a lot. It's a job for life. I have room to grow but as with anything civil service related, there's a ceiling. I'd probably make it to tops 70k a year. I'm on alpha pension which is pretty gold standard. I work fexi time and never have to think about work outside of the office. All work is done inside the office with no work from home.
I've just had an offer through to move into a large tech company within London and need to hear some thoughts because I can't for the life of me work out what to do...
The job would be London based with 3 days in the office a week minimum. I think this means it's not possible to commute as I'm over 2 hours away by direct train. It's a 40 hour work week. Pension is 7% matched. Comp package is 100k base with 15% performance annual bonus, 15k signon bonus and 60k USD stock over 4 years. To me that's an insane amount of money to be on so early in my career. Essentially in my first year I'd be looking at minimum £130k
I'm just not sure if moving to London for the jump in salary would negate it cost of living wise. I'm also very aware that although the hours and working environment would be good, there's a hell of a lot more expectation on you to perform than there is in the civil service (I'm not a slacker, I've just spoken to numerous people who say the performance reviews are tough to get your head around when you start). Job security is also a thing considering many large tech companies have been downsizing over the last few years...
I feel like I've just spat my thoughts on a page but.. anything anyone else thinks is worth thinking about I'd be much appreciative.
Cheers.
