Why does the FPE fandom overlap so much with the Sonic.exe fandom?

Hello! I've been following this subreddit for a while now and have noticed several FPE styled drawings with Sonic.exe characters in them. I don't see anything that FPE and Sonic.exe have in common, but they're both everywhere on this sub. How come?
