Is a long term EEG worth the price?
Hi all,
I had my first TC seizure about a month ago at 30 years old. In late 2023, I had a few focal aware and focal impaired seizures but didn’t know that’s what they were. I chalked them up to migraine auras and didn’t see a doctor about it. I had another focal aware in early January, and my husband insisted I go to the doctor to rule out TIA/stroke. Had an MRI that came back normal. Then I had a full on TC seizure about a week after the MRI. I was started on Keppra same day by my PCP. I saw neuro and had a 20 min EEG which also came back normal. My neuro is keeping me on Keppra but has upped it from 500bid to 1000bid. I was having breakthrough focal impaired at the lower doses. 2000mg seems to be keeping the smaller seizures at bay now that I’ve been on it for 9 days.
Anyway, the next step per neuro is a 72 hour video EEG. It’s going to cost me $3000 upfront with no option for a payment plan. I do not and will not ever have that money without getting a loan. I’m just wondering if the EEG is really worth it at this point in time? I don’t have an official diagnosis, but I am already on medicine and insurance covers a majority of the cost.
