What's with all the H1B ruckus?

They are going nuts on r/cscareerquestions about H1B. That ship sailed 25 years ago for EE. The IEEE USA was horn-blowing about it in the late 90's. Since then, it seems every electronic component manufacture has overseas design centers. If they are not coming here, then the work will go there.

I also think Ramaswamy has a valid point about American culture of mediocrity. Back when I was in grad school in 1994, 28 of 30 students in my DSP class were Asian foreign nationals. Look what China, Taiwan, and Korea have done with themselves in the last 30 years. The Triple Package book by Amy Chua (Tiger Mom fame) has a good analysis about 1st generation immigrant work and study ethic. Even Morris Chang of TSMC had this observation:

>>In the early 1980s, while still at Texas Instruments, Chang witnessed TI's factory in Japan achieving twice the chip production yield as TI's factory in Texas.\15]) Observing that the staff and technicians in Japan are better qualified and had lower turnover, and failing to recruit the same caliber of staff in the United States, he concluded that future of advanced manufacturing appeared to be in Asia.\15])
