Moving to Edinburgh... Which area?

My partner & I are soon to move to Edinburgh (from Glasgow) with our 18 month old son & our lurcher.

My partner is originally from the East Coast so the main reason is to be nearer her friends & family, as well as her career opportunities. However I'm really excited too, as I love Edinburgh & can't wait to live there.

I am a community nurse & will be most likely working in Leith. My partner is a charity worker & will be working in the city centre.

We'll probably rent for a few months until we can buy. Our budget will be up to £225k at the moment (limited by the cost of childcare right now). Of course we'd prefer to spend less if possible.

The things that are important to us are having a few nice pubs, cafes, bakeries etc within a reasonable walking distance, as well as nice parks for our son & plenty of nice places to go walking with the dog.

Of course we know our budget won't go too far in Edinburgh (not that it does in nice parts of Glasgow these days).

Our favourite location is Portobello, although not much comes up in our price range.

We like Leith too, although the 2 bedroom flats were can afford are often pretty tiny.

Other areas that come up a lot when we're looking for flats in our budget are Granton, East Pilton, Piersfield, Restalrig, Prestonfield, Carrick Knowe & Northfield.

A lot of these look like ex council areas & the flats look good sizes & value. However obviously would prefer not to bring up my son anywhere too rough.

Does anyone have any experiences or things to be aware of with these areas?

Another area that seems good value is Musselburgh. We particularly like the Fisherrow end near Portobello.
