Get someone into Commander/ Fix a bad first experience
How would you recommend getting someone into Commander/ fixing their mindset towards the format?
For context, I know someone who has played Magic on and off for a long period of time, mainly kitchen table stuff and draft. They actually got me into Magic, and I started playing at an LGS, which means having to play Commander. I also play 60 card formats as well, just not as often due to Commander's popularity at my LGS.
A few months ago, I tried to get them into Commander. When I first tried to show them commander, we played with people who also have never played Commander/ rarely play Magic. As a result, the game was long and it devolved into basically 2 1v1 games happening at the same time. It wasn't a great time, I was rather frustrated about the whole thing, and they went from being excited about Commander, to being rather negative to the format.
We tried playing Commander again a few weeks later, in a similar situation as the last time with people who don't really play. The games went faster, it wasn't as much of a struggle, and it didn't fall apart like last time, but they still seemed less than thrilled with the format.
I talked with them about it recently and they said there is too much to keep track of while playing Commander, and that theyre still interested, but it's not exactly wanting to jump back into the format.
I realize their first couple games were not the best way to get them into the format. I'm trying to get them to either play with my usual play group, who I play Magic with regularly and know how the format works, or to come with me to an event to play so they can actually experience Commander correctly.
If anyone has any ideas as how to remedy the situation, I would really appreciate it!
