Which US model would you suggest for someone’s first BMW and first project car?
Hello, all! Recently joined the group because I’ve got an itch to get an older BMW. I’ve broadened my search to include E34s because E30s have skyrocketed in price.
I’ll preface this by saying…I’m not a mechanic by any means. But I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty and watch a bunch of YouTube videos before diving into a project. I really want to learn more about working on cars and would like to start with a timeless BMW.
I’m looking to get something fun to drive, relatively easy to wrench on and find parts for, and won’t constantly be breaking once most maintenance is taken care of. (I realize that last part can be tough to gauge with older vehicles.) This won’t be my daily driver, though I hope to build it to the point that it could be if necessary.
I’d prefer a ‘93 and a manual. So far from my research, it seems the V8s are going to be the most “fun,” but they’re also going to be the most maintenance intensive. I like the thought of getting an I6 since that’s what BMW is known for, but I’m curious if the I6 is so slow that it’ll be boring to drive.
TLDR: I want a fun, older BMW to learn more about working on cars. What is my best option as far as E34? Should I avoid the V8 and stick with I6?
