Auxiliary Gems

I have some questions about this kind of gems. What makes a gem candidate to put it as an auxiliary gem? Where are the difference comparing to normal gem? Where can I get auxiliary gems? Why not all legendary gems can be use as auxiliary ones? Thanks for your help.
