PSA: IKEA's garlic press leaves WAY LESS garlic behind than OXO's

I have the OXO garlic press but I always find that it leaves more garlic behind than it yields. Then I saw in a Reddit comment thread a lot of people were vouching for the IKEA's Koncis garlic press, so I gave it a try. It leaves so much less garlic behind!

OXO Garlic Press IKEA Koncis Garlic Press
Garlic bulb weight 5g 4.8g
Minced Garlic Yield 2.1g 3.6g
Garlic Left in the Press 2.9g 1.2g
Yield % 42% 75%

The OXO garlic press has a lot of good reviews on the internet and I'm not sure why. It has extremely good build quality and the teeth for pushing out the garlic remained in the press are nice, but when it comes to the actual pressing, it just yields so little.

Hope this is helpful to some of ya!

Edit: Alright let's do this lol

  1. Microplane is NOT the same. It takes longer to grate, you have the risk of grating your fingers when you are at the last bit, and it gets your fingers all garlicky and sticky.
  2. I'm not using a knife. It's not easy to mine garlic well with a knife. I tried that rocking back and forth technique and it didn't work well for me. I also mostly use the santoku knife instead of a chef knife, and you can't really rock with a santoku knife. Mincing garlic with a knife is way more hassle than using a garlic press: it's sticky, it gets your fingers all sticky and garlicky smelling, it gets the knife sticky, it gets the chopping board sticky.
  3. Some said you get more yield out of the OXO one as you grate more garlic, but what if I just need to grate 1 or 2? Doesn't really solve the issue for me.
