Why does God allow atrocities to occur?

Hello everyone,

I know this is a question tons of people have asked before, but I feel like nobody has a good answer to this question and that doesn't sit right with me.

Why would God allow, for example, a child to get raped?

I know as humans we have free will, but why doesn't God step in to protect that child? What about the poor, unfortunate child, that will now probably be scarred for the rest of their life?

I've read the book of Job before, and I've noticed that God didn't really give Job a clear answer as to why he had suffered so much. I understand that God works in mysterious ways, but this is a hard pill to swallow for me.

I believe in God, but the problem of evil is a bit of a stumbling block to me.
