Is it worth it?
So to preface this, I have had sooooo many conversations with the leaders at my store about how they can improve for me and how I can improve for them. I would like to start by saying we have definitely put work in on both sides and made huge steps in the right direction.
With all that being said, I’m extremely dissatisfied with how things have been going. I was given very few hours last week, set up a meeting with the scheduling director and the executive director and we discussed how to move forward.
During this discussion, I gave them an idea of how many hours I want/need in any given week and they seemed to be on the same page. This week, they gave me just under the amount we discussed. It wasn’t the number that upset me, but the fact that it felt like they were just doing it to mess with me. Like here’s almost what you asked for.
Also, in the over 6 months I’ve been there, I have usually been put in the same few positions with a heavy emphasis being put on me being on IPOS. I don’t mind IPOS during the milder seasons, but at this time of year we get temperatures over 100° where I am. Also, when they do put me outside, I’ve been told we would have 15-30 minute rotations to prevent any heat related issues. While it’s not fun, it’s reasonable. Unfortunately, I’m constantly being told “I don’t have enough people to replace you” or “just go outside and we’ll figure it out later”.
Keep in mind the people telling me these things are leaders who the only time they have ever been outside was when I kept bringing up how they weren’t the ones dealing with the heat (then they each went out like once or twice over the period of a week to shut me up but have since gone back to never going out).
For context, we have 2-3 or sometimes 4-5 leaders on every shift. I do completely understand that when there are only 1-2 leaders on a shift, they need to be inside for obvious reasons… but when there’s 3 or more, one of them can take a turn outside.
Along with this, I’ve asked to learn to bag, multiple times, and I’ve asked multiple different leaders. I’ve yet to be put on bagging more than 2 times the entire time I’ve worked there.
My question at this point is, is it worth continuing to have conversations? Is it worth continuing to ask them to improve?
On one side, they have definitely improved a lot (though not as much as I would have hoped), but on the other, I’m mentally checked out right now because it’s been so long of me repeating myself and oftentimes I feel like I’m talking to a brick wall for weeks before anything changes.
