Women’s love declarations

I think it’s often the men’s love declarations and memorable lines that are focused on when it comes to this show, so I want to take a moment highlight the women’s love professions.

“I burn for you” is often attributed to Simon, but it is in fact Daphne who utters this famous line. It is also Daphne who is the one who puts herself out there and tells Simon she cannot continue to pretend that she doesn’t love him when she loves every part of him. This is ostensibly the speech that convinces Simon to let go of his vow to his father and make their marriage work so obviously a powerful sentiment from her.

Kate doesn’t really have a big love speech for Anthony. She says I love you too in response to his love speech.

Penelope initially fumbles by not returning Colin’s I love you when he says it to her, leaving him to ruminate on his insecurities and whether she returns his feelings. But she makes up for it later with multiple love declarations. There’s the church scene where she confesses to always loving Colin. I couldn’t find a GIF, but she calls him the kind and feeling, occasionally excitable, kind-hearted man who she loves, essentially describing a Golden Retriever, lol. There’s her shouting I love you at him which seems to be the one that really sinks in for him since it gets him horny on a public street (I will always view Colin as demisexual coded). My favorite though is her insisting that she doesn’t need Colin to play hero or be useful, he alone is enough. Those are words Colin has undoubtedly always needed to hear.

I consider Charlotte’s “I will stand with you between heaven and the earth” speech to be her big love declaration. It has a more argumentative tone to it, but I think it works well considering the heavy issues between Charlotte and George and the more bittersweet nature of their relationship as a whole.
