Absolute Astonishing Behaviour in US National Park
I'm British (M) and my husband (M) is American and we mostly live in the UK. We have been in the US a few weeks to see his family. It's been nice. Some of this trip has been to a National Park. It's been really enjoyable and fun - until this encounter.
Earlier in the week we were at a very busy national park in a desert region. There were hundreds of people milling around this rock formation. As I started to climb up it, I hear this voice:
EXCUSE ME SIR! YOU THERE! YOU IN THE BLACK! Please move. I am trying to take a photo with no people in it!!!! Please move!!!!!
I am standing on a large stone before getting to the larger rock I have to assail. I look at her, totally stunned by his behaviour. She turns back to her phone, and then says: "NO NO NO NO. This won't do at all. I can still see you IN MY PHONE. GO BACK DOWN. GET OUT OF MY PHOTO!!! RIGHT NOW. THIS ISN'T WORKING AT ALL."
This is like pouring petrol on a fire.
"NO." I say firmly, standing up on to the next rock. I'm British and so sometimes I have to slow and modulate the accent so other can understand, which I do now: "Just no. You will WAIT until I clear the climb then you can take your all-important photograph." She is genuinely stunned that someone has dared to speak back to her. Then another woman with her says: "Listen to him, he's an illegal."
"Oh just fuck off, the two of you," I respond, "This isn't your personal rock. You don't get to tell other people what to do in a US National Park. If you don't want people in your pictures taken in a major tourist attraction, learn how to use Photoshop."
As I scale the face of this rock, I hear her remark that she's going to phone the police to report me. When I get to the top, I turn back to her and say "Go on, take my picture then so you can add it to your police report."
Honestly, the entitlement and the arrogance is fucking overwhelming.
In the middle of last year in our honeymoon we encountered some astounding American boomers in Europe but it was genuinely stunning to find one like this in the middle of nowhere in the US.
