When do you know to use your inhaler?

My son is 10 and recently diagnosed. He thinks he’s only supposed to use it when he’s coughing. His doctor said it can be used whenever you feel like you need it, but I can’t get him to understand. He’s also the type that won’t tell if anything is wrong.
