When has it taken a tourist to appreciate something cool about the UK?

For me, my favourite example is Rocky Marciano and the Mumbles train.

Marciano is unquestionably the most devastating puncher in boxing history, he was only 32 when he retired 49-0 (the record that still stands amongst heavyweights) and even years after he left boxing, he injured Muhammad Ali during light sparring.

Yet Marciano’s favourite thing to do was to come to the UK back to Swansea where he had been a GI and visit the sea-side, riding the Mumbles train.

The train was closed in 1960, but it is nice to think that it meant the world to the world champion.
