What would Julius Caesar's legacy be if Augustus/Octavican never took power?
Julius Caesar is a household name today and one of the most prominent historical figures globally. No doubt he was a clever adminstrator and one of the greatest general of all time but would he achieve so much prominece if Octavian never did A+ PR for him? Say, if Octavian died during his journey to Rome from Greece after the assassination.
I feel like the assassins would do their best to portray him as a failed tyrant and I'm not sure if Antony could have maintained his power in the long run to preserve Caesar's legacy.
Would he have ended up being a more popular version of Hannibal? I doubt the name 'Caesar' would become synonymous with king across the world. Would Shakespeare still write a play about him if he wasn't as famous?
