Should Canada Secure Its Borders Against Fentanyl & Illegal Immigrants Regardless Of Tariffs?
Trump will impose 25% tariffs on Canada (starting on February 1st) unless we secure our border against illegal immigration and fentanyl. Why is it a bad idea to secure our own border from these things (particularly against fentanyl) - especially if it prevents a trade war with our largest trading partner?
Trump recently said that the tariffs will progressively increase until the border is secured.
It seems like Trump is using economic warfare to force the Canadian Government to act responsibly, I don't see the downside of stopping the flow of fentanyl into Canada (and by extension, the US). It seems like people are angry with Trump because he is bullying Canada into acting responsibly - even though we'd objectively be better off if we did act responsibly.
Over 300,000 Americans died last year alone from Fentanyl overdoses, can you really blame Trump for doing something about it? Especially when Mexico and Canada are the main ports of entry for this poison? Would you just do nothing if you were in his position?
Is it possible that securing the border is not only the CHEAPEST option, but also the ETHICAL option for Canadians?
