Why Brits are do negative about their country?

I live in South East Asia and I run into Brits all the time. I got the impression they are very negative towards their own country, this is different to Aussie, American and German. I probably would say Brits stand out as the most negative about their own country. I am wondering why is that? Is it a cultural thing or things have been very tough back home?
