East vs. West Australia

Hey there!

I’m flying into Australia for 3 weeks in April. I have been trying to put together an itinerary, but I cannot decide whether I want to focus on East or West Australia.

I am more of a nature focused traveller. I want to spend my time hiking and exploring the landscape rather than hanging out in any of the cities or partying. It looks like the West side offers more of a rugged natural escape (which I am drawn to), but I have heard many people say that for your first trip, you should focus on the east.

Any suggestions out there for me?

Update: Wow! This community is fantastic. Thank you for all the responses. I think I have it figured out for this trip, but it’s safe to say that I will have to come back. There were too many good recommendations here that I don’t want to pass up!!
