Flextight X5 scan prices

I'm looking into getting my 35mm negatives scanned on a Hasselblad Flextight X5 scanner. It seems the prices in the US are much more expensive than in the EU. Labs in LA & NYC seem to routinely charge $20-40 per frame. While in Europe they charge less than $8 (7.5 euros).

Why is this? Are the US labs offering me something more (other than quicker service)? Are there cheaper options in the US? If not, how come?
