What accounting speciality is the most lucrative and stable?

I currently work in marketing and the field is very unstable. Marketing always seems to be the first department to get cut during economic downturns and I've been laid off due to budget cuts multiple times in the last few years.

I'm strongly considering returning to school to earn my master's in accounting. I enjoyed the accounting classes that I took when I earned my previous degree and I'm looking for a much more stable career.

The accounting master's program that I'm considering offers 4 different specialties to choose from:

- Financial reporting

- Auditing

- Taxation

- Managerial Accounting

I like the idea of potentially focusing on Taxation. I want to find a stable role that doesn't require a lot of travel and I also like the idea of potentially having my own small business one day. However, I'd love to hear from people who already work in accounting. From your experience, what specialty is the most stable? What accounting focus did you choose and what's your day-to-day like in the role?
