Itimizing bills to clients

My accountant (who also takes care of my boookeeping within his firm) refuses to send me an itemized bill, saying they don't bill that way. Some months I get a $200 charge, other months $1500. This is aside from my returns which are billed separately. Is this normal? It's my first experience with an accountant so I wasn't sure.
