How important is having an intern?

Hello,

I recently started an online accounting degree in December. I have an undergraduate degree in a different field, so I was able to transfer in a good amount of credits over. I'm planning on finishing in 6 months ~ 1 year. Do you guys think it's worth trying to look for and do an internship or just focus on finishing my degree?

I was contacted for an interview opportunity for an accounting intern position, but it would be in person and the commute is 1hour one way. I'm not sure if it's worth going for this position or if I should try for something else. What do you guys think?

I also have heard a lot of bad things about public compared to industry. Is the tax/audit role that bad compared to staff accountant role? Almost every single intern role I see is either tax or audit.
